Rental villas have risen to the top of the holiday hit list for many savvy travellers, and choosing the right holiday tunes can help set the perfect ambience around your private pool, whether you are enjoying a quiet day doing nothing on a sun lounger or celebrating a special occasion with family and friends.
In Thailand and Bali, gone are the days of lounging by a hotel pool with your headphones turned up to the max in order to avoid being forced to listen to the same twenty “ambient” songs on a constant loop. Private rental villas on islands like Phuket, Koh Samui and Bali often come with state-of-the-art entertainment systems, which means all you have to do is dock your iPod and you’ll be listening to one of your favourite 100 albums, from dawn until dusk.
In the last year alone, travellers looking to update their iTunes libraries before heading on holiday were spoilt for choice with an impressive spread of classic albums released by established names as well as several brand new bands.
Here’s a selection of the best new music to surround yourself with on a villa holiday.
If Arcade Fire’s 2013 album “Reflektor” could be summed up in one word, that word would be “dance”. The quirky Canadian ensemble drew inspiration from sources as diverse as passionate Haitian drumming to New York disco to create an album that is a far cry from their alternative rock roots. The album incorporates a lot of funky pop familiarities, including the bass-line from Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” in the song “We Exist”. All in all, a lively album that’s sure to get you in the mood for a pool party.
Listen here:The Next Day…
Last year was a historic one for die-hard Bowie fans who had been holding their breath for their “Hero of Heroes” to bring out a new album. “The Next Day” did not disappointed. It’s a nerve-tingling collection of tracks that features standout tunes including “Where are we now?” – Bowie’s first single in over ten years, and the raging beat and guitar riff of the album’s title track, “The Next Day”. A long awaited classic that’s perfect to rock out on your next private vacation.
Jon Hopkins stand out album is an eclectic cacophony of dulcet piano chords and meaningful melodies, artfully interspersed with the sounds of everyday life. Hopkins has co-created wonderful music before with the likes of Coldplay, but “Immunity” is a masterpiece entirely of his own. The collection of soothing sounds Hopkins chose to infuse for this album gives it unusual depth, and ale makes it perfect for setting a meditative background on a relaxing afternoon sipping on coconut water whilst gazing over your villa’s lofty views of the Andaman Sea.
Listen here:Halycon Days
Having just scooped the Brit Award for Best British Female, it should come as no surprise that Ellie Goulding scores very highly on this year’s holiday artist hotlist. Well known for her relatable lyrics and piercing vocals, many of the tracks featured on Goulding’s 2013 re-loaded version of the album “Halycon” are perfect for ladies (or gentlemen) who enjoy a bit of a sing-along. The album opens with Goulding’s biggest hit to date, “Burn”. This celebratory track is followed by other recognisable tunes including “You My Everything” and “Stay Awake”, which combine Goulding’s emotive vocals with a characteristic electronic beat.
Listen here: Our Version of Events
Hailed by critics as a delightful collision – one that embodies heartfelt soul and folk-undertones simultaneously – no iPod should travel without Emeli Sande’s debut album, “Our version of events” loaded onto it. Having collaborated with many acts, including Professor Green, Chipmunk and Tinnie Tempah, it is fitting to finally hear Sande’s stunning vocals being given the spotlight they deserve. The Scottish singer’s hit “Read all about it” is the perfect backing track to a romantic sunset meal in your villa’s outdoor dining area. Another of the album’s breakout ballads, “My Kind of Love”, is a perfect choice for couples that want to set a romantic ambience throughout the villa.
